The Console Wars: Saturn vs. PlayStation

Honestly? I think this is a silly debate... Whether you're a fan of PlayStation's awesome 3D Platformers and RPGs or the Saturn's gorgeous 2D platformers, shmups and fighters, there's a lot to love here on both sides of the trenches! Now, I don't work for Sony or Sega, and I'm not a fanboy, so I've decided to keep this comparison refreshingly positive. I refuse to focus on the negatives. That's already been done to death! If you feel there's a clear winner here, then you might be somewhat biased or perhaps you aren't quite as familiar with the other console as you might think. Honestly, both systems had a fair share of crap titles, and you might argue that the PlayStation had 2,418 games to Saturn's 557, but believe me, more titles means more shovelware too. So, let's look directly at what both systems did well. I won't be scoring, so it's up to you to decide which machine merits your vote. More >>

Nintendo NES "Crash Course" Playlist

As a kid growing up in the 80's, I can remember just how big the NES really was. I mean, if you didn't have one, chances are you were playing one at a friend's house. If the latter is true, then it's safe to assume sleepovers were a common occurrence. I was one of those kids who had to sleep over at my friend Anthony's house in order to play Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt (at least until Christmas the following year), and It wasn't easy convincing my folks to buy into Nintendo after the great video game crash. My family owned an Atari 2600, so my parents weren't strangers to video game consoles, but due to all of the negative press video games were getting at the time, they were fairly skeptical about purchasing a new one. Luckily, with enough hounding, I was able to get them to see the light, and they bought an NES Action Set for my brother and I to share. More >>

Sony PlayStation "Crash Course" Playlist

To be honest, the PlayStation kind of snuck up on me. I was a 14 year old in 1995, perfectly happy with my Genesis & SNES and completely oblivious to Sony's plans for world domination. At the time I was familiar with the Sega Saturn, and wanted one badly, but I was extremely skeptical about any new company attempting to enter the gaming hardware realm. I mean, think about it... Many had already tried and failed. There was the 3DO, Amiga CD, Phillips CD-i, Atari Jaguar and the Pioneer LaserActive just to name a few. Hell, even the Neo•Geo and TurboGrafix met with only modest success in the States, despite being well established back in Japan and both great consoles in their own right. So, when I walked into my local EB Games, I had no idea what this flat gray box was or where it came from, but I remember being extremely doubtful that it would be anything more than another CD-i... Sega Genesis "Crash Course" Playlist

The Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) was badass back in 1990, and not much has changed! Fortunately, unlike the NeoGeo, it was affordable back then and still is today. I remember getting "mine" in 1991 for my sister's birthday. Well.., that is, I ended up playing it a lot more than she did, so... yeah. Anyway, where do I begin? The machine was jet black and came with an attitude. It had amazing 16-bit graphics and one of the best sound chips I've ever heard. Oh, did I mention BLAST PROCESSING..? The Genesis had freaking BLAST PROCESSING, and that had me sold from day one! It would take a nearly perfect console such as this to do battle with Nintendo's looming juggernaut, the Super Nintendo, and it would be one of the closest fight in history. More >>

Super Nintendo "Crash Course" Playlist

This console defined my early childhood... Sure, I suppose I did have a 2600, an NES, a Genesis and even a Game Boy first.., but those were all bestowed upon me without much preempting. The 2600 and the NES got me hooked on video games in the first place, and the Genesis helped me acquire a more sophisticated gaming pallet, but the SNES was different. All of my previous gaming experience led me to one inescapable conclusion... I just had to have a Super Nintendo! I begged for that thing for a whole year! I pined for that machine like no other, and when it came for Christmas 1992 with a copy of The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, it was everything I'd been waiting for! With 256 colors, awesome sound, great controllers and an excellent game library including RPGs, Platformers, Beat'em ups and Fighters the SNES was solid from top to bottom. Everything about the SNES was "Super," and let's not forget Super Mario World and Super Metroid! Just writing this makes me want to play those games right now... More >>

Nintendo 64 "Crash Course" Playlist

I'll admit I didn't own a Nintendo 64 back when it came out. No, our house had Saturn and a PlayStation on top of our aging 3rd and 4th generation consoles, and those seemed to be enough. However, I'll also admit that my jaw dropped when I saw the N64 kiosk at Electronic Boutique in 1996! Seeing Super Mario 64 in action was enough to make me jealous of friends that had it, but actually playing it..? The game played like no other 3D platformer to come before it, and some will argue that the genre begins and ends there. The N64 couldn't play CDs, it's games were often limited by the size it's cartridge format and the controller was a real head scratcher (what was Nintendo thinking?), but when it came to 3D gameplay, this curvy console proved it's worth.
